Congenital Disorders: An Ayurvedic Perspective on Understanding and Support

Congenital disorders are structural or functional anomalies that are present at birth and can affect a person’s physical or mental development. These conditions may result from genetic factors, nutritional deficiencies, toxins, or imbalances during pregnancy. Ayurveda classifies such disorders under the category of “Adibala Pravritta Rogas”, meaning diseases originating from the parental lineage or prenatal influences.

According to Dr. Varun Ram Raj, one of India’s leading Ayurvedic experts, congenital disorders are linked to dosha imbalances in the fetus, improper lifestyle and diet during pregnancy, or karmic and hereditary influences that affect shukra (sperm) and artava (ovum) quality.

Ayurveda places great importance on Garbha Sanskara—prenatal care practices that promote the physical, mental, and spiritual well-being of the unborn child. These practices aim to purify the parents’ bodies, strengthen reproductive health, and ensure healthy fetal development.

Dr. Varun Ram Raj recommends the following Ayurvedic approaches for congenital health support:

● Preconception care (Beeja Shuddhi) to cleanse and nourish reproductive tissues

Garbhini Paricharya – a trimester wise regimen for pregnant women to promote healthy fetal growth

Use of Rasayanas like Ashwagandha, Shatavari, and Brahmi under supervision

Balanced sattvic diet, yoga, meditation, and positive sensory input during pregnancy

Early postnatal care (Sutika Paricharya) to support both the mother's and the baby’s development

While Ayurveda does not claim to cure all congenital conditions, it offers support in managing symptoms, enhancing quality of life, and preventing further complications.

Ayurveda teaches that a conscious, healthy beginning paves the way for a strong and balanced life.

Stay healthy always !
